1 Trend, 2 Ways- Lingerie as Outerwear
This A/W 2016, the runways of designers like Bottega Veneta, Alberta Ferretti, Missoni and Prada had a decidedly Moulin Rouge-inspired feel to them by giving us looks sensually laced with corsets, negligee-inspired nothings and transparency. That may be all well and good on the catwalk where the aim is to well, put on a show but how does one take the Lingerie as Outerwear Trend from the catwalk to real life? I thought it would be interesting and fun to take this challenge up with digital influencer, Stephanie Okafor (Metrogypsie). I’m a huge fan of the 90s Madonna & Jean Paul Gaultier bustier era, so I knew a bustier would be the foundation of my outfit and I would build my look with it in mind.
I chose an all-black outfit to reign my look in because my WYLDR bustier shows a good amount of cleavage and the skirt is made out of leather and see-through lace, 2 very sexy fabrics! The lace fringed shawl also upgrades my look and I like to think that with the red lipglass and floral crown- my look has a Latina vibe!
As you all know, I’m crazy about accessories so I used statement metallic jewellery to uplift my all-black outfit.
– With lingerie inspired pieces that you want to wear in the harsh light of day, stay away from bawdy colours like red which can look cheap and very Lady Marmalade-like.
-For the faint-hearted, start this trend of slowly by investing in a semi-sheer chiffon blouse or lace buttoned-up top. Then ‘cover up’ your statement bra, bralette, corset or bustier with this top, that way you only hint at what lies beneath.
My only question now is- do you dare to bare?
