African Photography Exhibition- MTINDO, ‘Rebranding Africa’
On Friday, 29th October, I attended the African photography exhibition- MTINDO, in Berlin. The exhibition featured a selection of curated images taken from the book, MTINDO. The word MTINDO means ‘style’ in Swahili, and yet ‘movement’. In this book, photographer Daniele Tamagni captures a diverse of array of new generation ‘style movers’ in Africa- from musicians to artists and filmmakers, the aim of the book and photography project is to portray the modernity of avant-garde creatives from the African content. Of course this wouldn’t be complete without portraying a visual feast of African fashion.

I loved the representation of the African hard metal scene via the pictures/book in the exhibition. When most people think of African fashion/style, vibrant visions of punchy print and vivid hues come to mind, and although this is a strong characteristic of our aesthetic, there is another side or tribe so to speak. For example, the Kenyan/East African heavy metal scene has grown a lot over the past 10 years through radio and word of mouth, inspiring many fans to form bands and rock out. I am looking forward to the day the movement gains more mainstream appeal, so it can fully add to our nation’s musical landscape. As you can see from the picture above, the scene is very much into black, leather, suede, studs, chains, spikes…I’d love to raid their wardrobes!
The gentleman with the glasses holding MTINDO, is the very talented Italian photographer- Daniele Tamagni.
The lady I am standing with below is Waridi Schrobsdorff, she founded fa254 in 2013- Fashion African 254 is an international social business aiming to enhance, develop and globalize fashion industries in Africa via strengthening the local markets. MTINDO is a photographic project commissioned by fa254.

African photography exhibition
The exhibition is at DiehlCUBE (Emserstr. 43) and is on view- 28th October-6th November. If you are in Berlin, you must- yes, MUST go and see it.
The publication, MTINDO has 218 pages and is 35 Euros. The official sale starts May 2017 and the book will be available globally in bookstores and all major online retailers.
