The web is chockablock with various ways to grow back your hairline and I have to say that in growing my hairline back, I had to learn a lot about what I shouldn’t as well as what I had to do. This is because whilst growing my natural hair I had a lot of false starts where I suffered hair breakage and had to go back to the drawing board to start growing my hair afresh.

So my receding hairline treatment is a mix of what to do and what not to do.

How to Get Edges To Grow Back- The Dos and Dont’s

Do-

  • Massage hair stimulating oils into your hairline in the morning and at night. There are many hair growth activators like Coconut oil, Olive oil, Argan oil and Jojoba oil. However, through trial and error, I swear by Jamaican Black Castor Oil. Black castor oil is an emolient that’s rich in Vitamin E and Omega-9 fatty acids which also helps to replenish your skin.
  • Regular hair treatments. This year I promise to be better with this, I live in Berlin where it’s often cold and the water is harsh so I am constantly suffering hair breakage which isn’t good for my hairline. The benefits of hot oil treatments is that heat opens the cuticle of the hair and allows moisture to absorb into the hair shaft. A lot of people like to mix their oils but erm, I’m lazy and just use, yup you guessed it- Jamaican Black Castor Oil.
  • Use natural, healthy or organic products. In a nutshell, hair products stuffed with lauryl sulfate, parabens, silicone and synthetic preservatives tend to suffocate our hair and its ability to look and grow to its full potential. It took me a while to find the natural brands that worked with my hair, there was a time when my dressing table looked like a black hair shop. Now my favourite natural hair care brands are AS I AM and Shea moisture.
  • Take hair supplements which can support hair growth. Apart from having a healthy diet and drinking water by the bucket load, it’s advisable to take multivitamins or individual vitamin supplements. I take Biotin daily. Biotin increases the density of hair and helps to produce more hair.
  • Trim your hair. I read this everywhere, and I am apprehensive about it because every time I get my hair trimmed professionally, she takes of too damn much and I spend about half the year trying to grow it back again. Grrrr, having said that, I’m going for another trim this month. If you have any tips on how to avoid her taking half my hair off, do leave a Comment below. Ps going to another hair stylist or cutting my hair myself is N.O.T an option.

Don’t-

  • Fix braids, weaves or any style that applies pressure on your hairline/scalp. This may seem extreme, but the first time my hairline began to show signs of growth a year back, I braided my hair. At the time, I made sure the braids weren’t tight, I even left some of my hairline at the front and used the braids in the middle of my head to cover the balding. Guess what? More of my hairline still fell out. Moral of the story? When growing your hairline, leave it and the area around it the hell alone.
  • Sleep on a cotton pillowcase or nightcap which will soak up your natural oils and moisture, leaving your hair dry and vulnerable to breakage. Instead ensure your nighcap is satin and your pillow case is as well.
  • Comb/brush your hairline. Now this is a tricky one and one I still battle it. I like to comb out my hair so it puffs out and I can see how my hair is growing. However when I noticed my hair wasn’t growing quickly enough, I stopped combing out my hair and tried this defining curls hairstyle instead and I noticed my hair shed a lot less.
  • Blow dry your hair. Personally, I’ve found that when I dry my hair with a blow dryer, it falls out. So now I let my hair dry natually when I wash it. My hair is super sensitive what can I say. Yours might not be as sensitive, but I’d advise you to stay away from heat styling.
